"Racing teaches us to challenge ourselves. It teaches us to push beyond where we thought we could go. It helps us to find out what we are made of. This is what we do. This is what it's all about."

DCRRC One Hour Track Run - Alexandria VA

Two days packed of races wasn't enough ... so Monday evening we ran one hour on the track.
Every year, in May, Robert Platt puts together this unusual race ... the aim is to is to cover the most distance in one hour of running.
The last two years it took place at the St. Stephens High School Track in Alexandria.
All the runners start at the same place and time with a popsicle in their hand, a couple of "judges" count the laps each runner has completed, and after one hour of running (signaled by Bob's scream) each runner drops its popsicle allowing the detailed measurement.
The race is really cheap (free for DCRRC Members, $5 for non-members), water and Gatorade were available every 400 meters (every lap) and overall it was great fun.

Try it ... it's really a different and nice experience... not as boring as it seems.

PVTC All comers T&F meet - Falls Church VA

PVTC All comers T&F meet - Falls Church VA

... after the 4-miler post race activities and awards ceremony we hit t he road and travelled to Falls Church for the first 2012 PVTC Outdoor All-Comers Track and Field meet.

I always loved to race on the track, so when I have a change i won't let it go; and the event hosted by Potomac Valley Track Club provides a great opportunity to race on a track without worrying on being too slow.
Here's the link to the event series.

I run the 3000 mt and the 800 mt, Simonetta went only for the 3000mt ... the results are not available yet. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks Dustin for the beautiful pictures!

Mother's Day 4-miler - Reston VA

Mother's Day 4-miler - Reston VA

On Mother's Day we choose to race a fairly unusual distance, a 4 miler in north Reston (Virginia).

Well organized race (perfect organization is becoming now a standard for the Potomac River Running Race Series) on a tough, hilly course.
As usual shirts were great and flowers for moms at the end were a nice touch.

The race, which benefits Devotion To Children (DTC), started on Baron Cameron Avenue and finished at Browns Chapel Park.

Here the final results.

BTW: Great race Hugh, it's good to see that you have fully recovered from your injuries!

Manassas Runway 10k - Manassas VA

Manassas Runway 10k - Manassas VA

Ever run on an Airport Runway??? Well, I did few times but it's always a pleasure. For this reason, last Saturday we ran at the Manassas Regional Airport in Manassas, VA, and we had    great fun!

We choose to run the 10k (there's also a 5k ... actually it turned out to be a 4 point something k), really fast and flat course along the runways, taxi ways, and around the local roads of the airport.

Very nice race although few things could have been done better such as delay the start 30 minutes (7:30 is way too early ... especially considering that you don't need to close roads), separate arrivals lanes for the 5k and the 10k (there was an overlap of fast and slow runners on the finish stretch), or better markings for the course (turns) of the 5k; hopefully those will be fixed in the future.

Here the final results.

Get Smart! 5k - Leesburg VA

Get Smart! 5k - Leesburg VA

... a couple of days ago, last Saturday, we ran the Get Smart! 5k.

Really nice and well organized race which begins at Smart’s Mill Middle School with a short up-hill and continues on a fairly flat but challenging course (you run mostly on the sidewalks) to the end.

Excellent management of pre- and post- race activities including great food from Moe's Southwestern Grill and Eggspectations (I love their yogurt!!!) and awards (money prizes for the top 3 overall).

17th Annual Pike's Peak 10K - Rockville MD

Here some pics ... Thanks Dustin, Hai and Miles!

17th Annual Pike's Peak 10K - Rockville MD

17th Annual Pike's Peak 10K - Rockville MD

Yesterday was a great sunday; finally all the pieces of the puzzle fitted in place and I was able to improve my 10K PR.

The weather was perfect (bright sun, 50s warming into the 60s, and a slight tailwind), the course is the fastest you can find in the National area (one turn in the half first mile, and then straight the rest of the way with a net downhill), the field of runners is amazing and most important of all at this point of the season I'm in a great shape!

I finally broke 34 minutes ... since 2008 i went close at least 5 times (running between 34:10 and 34:20) but I couldn't find the right conditions ... well, yesterday I made it, a new PR in 33 low ... sadly I still keep thinking what I could have done in Boston two weeks ago :-(

This race is great, excellent organization (especially considering that it's a point to point race), great support and amazingly fast course. Definitively a race it's worth running.
