"Racing teaches us to challenge ourselves. It teaches us to push beyond where we thought we could go. It helps us to find out what we are made of. This is what we do. This is what it's all about."

The Perfect 10! - Reston VA

Brilliant and original idea for this morning's race.
The perfect 10, each runner had the ability to choose whether to run a 10 km or 10 miles.

Both courses departed and arrived at South Lakes High School in Reston, VA and snaked along the broad streets of the local area.
A wet morning and the hilly terrain had an impact on the final results but other than that everything went very well.
The 10 miler  was "queen" race of the event both from the point of view of number and quality of participants.
... However, the 10K winner is not that bad after all  ...   ;-)

Here's the final results.

The Perfect 10! - Reston VA

Kensington MD 8K

As per an annual Kensington tradition since 1993, this morning at 8:30 the 8K race started nearby the Kensington Town Hall.
The race has a true small-town feel and the challenging course, combining long hills and flats (it winds through historic Old Town Kensington and beautiful Rock Creek Park) made it a great race or training run.

The pre-race operations emphasized the excellent organization, highlights were the parking (with many well-placed signs and volunteers who promptly pointed to the nearest free parking space) and the rapid process for pack and bib pick-up (well done girls !) KUDOS!

After the race,  we all appreciated the home-made muffins and bread, available for all the runners. A special and sincere "Well done" goes to the young rock band who cheered the event with great music!

Here today's results (male and female).  This race was the 2011 racePacket Grand Prix Series.
Here's Moreland's article on Washington Running Report.

Kensington MD 8K

South Fairfax Chamber Challenge 10K - Lorton VA

This morning, at the South County Secondary School in Lorton VA, the third edition of the South Fairfax Chamber Challenge 10K took place.
The undulating course winds through the western streets of Lorton where once stood a Nike missile site (placed there during the Cold War to defend the city of Washington) and a prison, today the first left room to a golf course and the second has become a lovely park (Laurel Hill Park) for a variety of outdoor activities.
I went back to racing this race after winning the first edition (in 2009), and although I was faster than 2 years ago I had to settle for third place (anyhow I'm very happy for the final result).

Here the results (female first and male to follow).

South Fairfax Chamber Challenge 10K - Lorton VA

Run! Geek! Run! 8K

The fourth edition of the Run! Geek! Run! 8K was held this morning at West Potomac Park in Washington DC.
The flat and fast route along the Potomac River (from Ohio Dr SW all the way to southern tip of H
ains Point and back), the nice temperature (in the high forties at the race start) and, for once, the lack of wind allowed excellent results.

Here the results (male and female) and the well-written and comprehensive article by James Moreland of Washington Running Report.

Minor flaws: the misplacement of the mile-markers and the awards limited to 10-year age group (the previous years it was done in 5 years increment).

The race was the eighth of the 2011 Grand Prix Series racePacket.

Douglas Flood (photo) of Annandale, Virginia, got into the spirit of the race and dressed appropriately ...

Run! Geek! Run! 8k

116th Boston Marathon

The Boston Marathon is marathon hosted by the US city of Boston, Massachusetts, on Patriots' Day, the third Monday of April. Begun in 1897 the Boston Marathon is the world's oldest annual marathon.

The Boston marathon is open to runners 18 or older from any nation, but they must meet certain qualifying standards. To qualify, a runner must first complete a standard marathon course certified by a national governing body affiliated with the International Association of Athletics Federations within a certain period of time before the date of the desired Boston Marathon (usually within approximately 18 months prior).

Finally this time I was able to register ... April 16, 2012 I will be in Boston!

116° Boston Marathon

Parks Half Marathon - from Rockville MD to Bethesda MD

This morning at 7 o'clock sharp, the approximately 1400 "half-marathoners" (... I'm not quite sure it's the right word...) started running from Rockville, MD towards Bethesda MD. Now in its sixth year, the Parks Half Marathon (organized by the Montgomery County Road Runners Club) has become a little classic and, at the same time, a test for the preparation of the major autumn marathons (Chicago, Marines and New York).
The insidious course, the ascents and descents, the narrow and slippery
path of the Rock Creek Trail, the blind's and sharp bends, the mud and dirt do not make this a "looking for PR race" but you have to take it for what it is, a race with themselves and opponents rather than the stopwatch.

Excellent, as usual the organization of the MCRRC both before, during and after the race. Fast baggage check process, lots of water stops during the race (with a lot of port-a-potty along the course), and in the post-race nice rock concert with lots of food and drinks plus complimentary Metro ticket to go back to Rockville. WELL DONE!

I am quite satisfied with my performance today, although I closed with forty seconds more than last year. This Half Marathon came after a good 5k yesterday and today I was still able to finish with a pace faster than the expected marathon one (we will try to draw conclusions in less than a month in Chicago ...).

Here the overall results.

Parks Half Marathon - from Rockville MD to Bethesda MD

Chick-fil-A 5k - Sterling VA

This morning we ran a 5k race (part of the PR-2011 Trophy Series) in Sterling (VA), not far from Washington-Dulles International Airport.
The PR 2011 Trophy Series is a set of 19 races,
sponsored by "Potomac River Running", taking place around the DC area which provide a final ranking created by adding the points that each runner collects during the year based on his placing in the individual events ... easier to run than to explain it ...

Nice race: fast course,
optimal weather conditions and the presence of strong athletes (the pace from the start was awesome). Everything allowed great results for me the second best time on a 5k since I moved to the U.S. 2 years ago ...
Moreover, the
Chick fil-A  "cow" was present at the start and finish.

Here the final results.

Chick-fil-A 5k - Sterling VA

Labor Day Presidential Fitness Runs - Hains Point, East Potomac Park (DC)

... and finally to complete properly the long weekend Monday at noon it was time for the "Presidential Fitness Run" organized by the "Tidal Basin Runs".
It was possible to choose one of the following four events:

One Mile - The George Washington Race
Three Kilometers - The Thomas Jefferson Race
Five Kilometers - The James Monroe Race
Ten Kilometers - The John Tyler Race

I decided to run the last one (the 10K); results are posted here.

Labor Day Presidential Fitness Runs - Hains Point, East Potomac Park (DC)

One Mile - The George Washington Race
Three Kilometers -- The Thomas Jefferson Race
Five Kilometers -- The James Monroe Race
Ten Kilometers -- The John Tyler Race

Questa volta ho scelto l'ultimo (la 10K), qui i risultati.

2011 Larry Noel 15K Race

Sunday afternoon, as a tradition for the Labor Day Weekend, it's time for the Larry Noel 15K.
The course is very challenging, constant ups and downs, stretches north of Greenbelt (MD) through the USDA Henry A. Wallace Beltsville Agricultural Research Center.

Here the T-shape course map.

The warm and humid climate has made the race much more tougher, and the results (posted here) were most definitively affected by that.

The awards covered the final top 3 overall finishers, the first Master and the top 3 in each 10-year age group.

2011 Larry Noel 15K Race

ThorpeWood's 10K Trail Run - Thurmont MD

Sunday morning it was time for a trail run 10k in Thurmont (at an altitude of about 1500 ft in the middle of the Catoctin Mountains - north-western part of Maryland).
The competition, now in its fourth edition, took place along a series of scenic trails on the property of ThorpeWood, and allowed to visit among other things, a pond, an arboretum, pastures with Icelandic horses and an orchard of chestnut trees .
The 10K race was composed by two laps, very technical characterized by both stretches of fast roads and paths with emerging stones and tree roots (there was a 5K fun run ... guess what ... a single lap). Post-race, we had awards and prizes donated by local businesses, refreshments and drinks for the runners with a lot of beer offered by the Flying Dog Brewery.
A beautiful morning in a different kind of place really far from the chaos of the city.

ThorpeWood's 10K Trail Run - Thurmont MD

Ellicott City MD - Knights of Columbus 10K Run

This morning it was the turn of the KoC 10K, a challenging and stimulating race that starts and ends in front of the Shrine of St. Antonio (in the suburbs of Ellicott City, Maryland) and proceeds through residential neighborhoods and the surrounding countryside.Excellent organization of the event at any time, from parking, to the fast processing of applications for registration, the magnificent the national anthem sung "a cappella", and the outstanding prizes and awards. The post-race then provided games for children (inflatable slides), massages for the runners and plenty of food/refreshments for all (bagels, donuts, pizza and lots of fruit).
The course is challenging, many ups and downs, but what hurts most was a long climb (although with slopes contained) in the last 3 km ... I have to admit, I suffered fatigue at the end.

If you can, plan to race it; you will not be disappointed !

Ellicott City MD - Knights of Columbus 10K Run

Baltimore Grand Prix 5K

I already raced in athletics tracks, horse tracks ... but never in a car race track.
Last night I did !
This weekend Baltimore will host the inaugural 2011 Grand Prix (Indycar street circuit) and on Friday, as a side event the first edition of the Baltimore Grand Prix 5K is scheduled.
After a full the afternoon watching the practice sessions (all pre-registered runners received a complementary Grand Prix admission ticket ), we raced on the same streets that the IndyCar Series used. The course covered approximately 1 1/2 loops of the track but was a little shorter than 5k (the course was not USATF certified, lacking about 200 meters by our GPS).
But it was beautiful ! .
Too bad for the course not certified ... the track is fast and it was very exciting to run in it.
Here the results .... BTW: since the first edition I have the record of the race ;-)

Baltimore Grand Prix 5K

Roosevelt Run 5K

Last night I run the Roosevelt 5K, a small race that takes place in one of the most scenic and representative spots of Arlington.
The start (and finish) is located near the Key Bridge in Rosslyn and the route(out-and-back) runs along the Mount Vernon Trail, on the banks of the Potomac River, past Theodore Roosevelt Island, Lincoln Memorial and below Memorial Bridge.
Just few participants but friendly and nice atmosphere and awards for almost everyone ...
The only flaw due to the massive presence of cyclists and walkers, as a matter of fact the trail is open to other users during the race.
The results available here
.

Roosevelt Run 5K

Steve Thompson 8K

Last night we took part at the Steve Thompson 8K, race organized by the DC Road Runners Club, the eighth and final chapter of the 2011 Bunion Derby Series.
The race wound its way from Bluemont Park in Arlington (starting at the South Pavilion) along the Four Mile Run Trail, continues north along the W &OD Trail, turn into Custis Trail and then continue until the "turning point" placed after a series of steep hills at Taylor Street (across from Washington Lee High School).
Despite the difficulty of the course the race was very fast (the top 3 finished in sub-28 minutes), most probably the cool evening temperatures helped a lot.
Quick award cerimony and nice prizes, the results are posted here.

Steve Thompson 8K
